Seven women were killed by soldiers during a protest in Adamawa

During a protest in Adamawa State's Lamurde Local Government Area, seven women were killed and 11 injured.

According to Daily Trust, the women were protesting the military's delayed response to calm tensions between the Bachama and Chobo villages in the LGA when the incident occurred on Monday, December 8, 2025.

The women, who were spotted carrying leaves, halted troop deployment into the area, accusing security forces of slow responses and unfair interventions in favor of the Chobo community.

However, during the fight, sources claim that the military fired rounds into the crowd, killing four ladies on the scene and while three others died in the hospital. It was also revealed that 11 people who were hurt are presently receiving care.

"They came out calmly, carrying leaves and appealing for security, but were confronted with live gunshots.

"The wounded were brought to Numan General Hospital, where medical officials claim some are still in serious condition," District Head of Gyawana, hamlet in Lamurde LGA, Chief Agoso Bamaiyi stated.

Following the event, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri declared 24-hour curfew in Lamurde Local Government Area.

The instruction was made on Monday in statement published by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Hussaini Hammangabdo. He acknowledged that the governor has instructed security operatives to immediately proceed into the volatile communities.

According to the statement, Fintiri directed security agencies to respond quickly to the fresh situation in order to restore stability and prevent additional breakdowns of law and order.

The Adamawa State Government has imposed 24-hour curfew on the Lamurde Local Government Area, effective immediately, following repeat community confrontation on Sunday evening," the statement said.

According to Hammangabdo, security forces have been asked to immediately move into the area and restore peace and order.

The state government also urged Lamurde locals to remain calm and cooperate with deployed authorities as efforts to manage the situation and prevent further violence escalate.

The new violence came mere days after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri secured fragile peace settlement between the warring Chobo and Bachama tribes, according to Dr. Jamila Suleiman, Executive Vice Chairperson of the Adamawa State Peace Commission.

When contacted by phone, S.P. Suleiman Nguroje, the police spokesman for Adamawa State Command, acknowledged that several individuals died and that the injured were transferred to hospital for treatment.

"Lives were lost. But, for the time being, we cannot say how many people died, but those who were injured have been transferred to hospital for treatment," he said.

Nguroje stated that based on the reports he received in the morning, the incident was centered in Rugange and neighboring communities, down to Wadugo.

When asked about the reason of the event, the spokesman stated police had been dispatched to the area to examine the underlying cause, and he would not pre-empt their findings.

"I beg that we allow them the opportunity to come forward with their findings on what must have provoked the confrontation and make it known to the members of the public," he continued.
