Alex Otti Endorsed as Labour Party Leader
The Labour Party has formally named Abia State Governor Alex Otti as its National Leader and extended its goodwill to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his decision to align with the African Democratic Congress.

The development was announced in a communiqué issued by the party’s National Secretary after a meeting of the National Working Committee held on Wednesday. The meeting focused on matters concerning the party’s stability, growth, and future direction.

According to the communiqué, members of the committee unanimously agreed to recognise Governor Otti as the party’s national leader. The statement noted that the decision was reached collectively, affirming Alex Otti’s position as the new national leader of the Labour Party.

The party also commented on Peter Obi’s exit, expressing goodwill and support for him in his future political journey. In its statement, the Labour Party said it wishes him well in his political pursuits and in his new party.

Additionally, the National Working Committee recognised former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the party’s National Chairman. The party explained that this decision aligns with a Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which ruled that the tenure of Julius Abure as National Chairman had come to an end.

The Labour Party also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to formally recognise Nenadi Usman as the party’s National Chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as National Secretary, in line with the Supreme Court ruling already acknowledged by the electoral body.

In addition, the National Working Committee stated that all party congresses, as well as the forthcoming National Convention, would be conducted strictly in accordance with the provisions of the party’s constitution. Party members at all levels were encouraged to take active part in the congress and convention processes.

Reaffirming the party’s unity and commitment to its ideals, the National Working Committee thanked party members and Nigerians for their continued support. It emphasized that the Labour Party remains dedicated to building a nation based on equal opportunity, social justice, and good governance.

The party also recalled that it placed third in the 2023 presidential election, with Peter Obi as its candidate.
