Inmate Recaptured After Escaping With Uniform of Stabbed Prison Official

A convicted violent offender serving a lengthy prison sentence was swiftly recaptured on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, after attempting a bold escape from the Harare Magistrates Court in Zimbabwe.

The 33-year-old inmate, who had been brought to court for an unrelated legal matter, launched the escape attempt after attacking a correctional officer assigned to escort him from a holding cell. The officer sustained injuries to the face and neck after being assaulted with a sharp object and was later taken to a medical facility, where he was reported to be in stable condition.

Following the attack, the inmate removed the injured officer’s uniform and attempted to disguise himself as prison staff in an effort to exit the courthouse undetected. The unusual movement immediately raised suspicion, triggering a rapid security response within the court complex.

Correctional tactical units, dog handlers, and on-duty officers quickly sealed off the area and began a coordinated search. The inmate was located and apprehended shortly afterward while hiding within the court premises, preventing a successful escape.

Reports from court officials indicate that the suspect was found concealed near restricted access areas and was in possession of a set of keys believed to have been taken during the assault.

The inmate, a resident of Glen View, is already serving a sentence estimated to range between 38 and 45 years for a series of serious crimes, including unlawful entry, sexual assault, and armed robbery. His court appearance on Tuesday was connected to a separate, newly filed allegation of sexual assault.

Authorities confirmed that additional charges related to the attack on the correctional officer and the attempted escape are expected to be filed as investigations continue.
