Why I Don’t Own Land or a House in Abuja – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former presidential candidate, revealed that he does not own any property or land in Abuja. He explained that this is a conscious choice intended to minimize unnecessary stress.

Obi shared this insight during a casual discussion at a coffee meetup with KayhikersClub in Abuja, where he talked about his lifestyle and perspective on public service.

Peter Obi stated, “I don’t have a house in Abuja, I don’t have land, and I’m not preparing to have any because I don’t need it.” He explained that accumulating material possessions often brings unnecessary pressure and distractions. Obi added that his simple lifestyle has played a role in maintaining his good health over the years.

Reflecting on his experiences in public and corporate service, Peter Obi shared that during his tenure as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), he turned down official perks. He declined offers of official vehicles, accommodation allowances, and sitting allowances, emphasizing that he only wished to attend meetings when necessary.

“You can verify for yourself—when I was chairman, did I ever collect anything?” Obi remarked.

He also recounted a similar approach during his time as Chairman of Fidelity Bank, noting that he declined the luxury vehicles he was entitled to, explaining that he already had all he needed.

“I have enough. I don’t need to chase giveaways; what I need, I already have,” Obi concluded, emphasizing his commitment to modest living and personal contentment.
