Northumberland Army Officer Killed in Live Firing Drill

An army officer has tragically died following a live-fire training exercise.

Captain Philip Gilbert Muldowney, 25, lost his life on Sunday during an incident at Otterburn Training Area in Northumberland, one of the country’s largest military training ranges.

He served as a Fire Support Commander with 129 (Dragon) Battery of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery, based at Alanbrooke Barracks in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

A spokesperson for the Army confirmed that the circumstances surrounding Captain Muldowney’s death are under investigation.

The Commanding Officer of the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery described him as an immensely enthusiastic officer who inspired everyone around him. Known simply as Gilbert, he consistently put his soldiers first, led by example, and earned widespread respect for his leadership, courage, and dedication to duty.

Friends and colleagues remember Captain Muldowney for his easy-going nature, boundless energy, and infectious sense of humour. He was praised for his ability to lift spirits and make the best of any situation, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Described as an unforgettable character and a rising star within the Army and his regiment, his loss is deeply felt, with thoughts and prayers extended to his family during this difficult time.

Captain Helen Brackenbury added that Muldowney was a truly kind, highly competent, and endearingly joyful person. She highlighted his authentic leadership style, noting that he served those under his command with sincerity and spirit, inspiring admiration from all around him.

Captain Muldowney joined the Army on January 5, 2020, and was commissioned into the Royal Artillery on December 11, 2020, following his training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
