Bayo Onanuga has sparked debate after calling for a hardline response to rising cases of highway vandalism in Nigeria.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has sparked controversy after calling for the immediate execution of vandals caught stealing or damaging materials on federal highways.

Onanuga made the remark on Sunday while reacting to a video shared on X by user Salanwu Omoiyaonipako, which showed suspected vandals cutting starter bars and shoulder rods at the reconstruction site of the Ibadan–Ilesa/Ife Federal Highway.

In the video, Omoiyaonipako expressed frustration over the persistent destruction of public infrastructure despite ongoing government efforts to improve road networks nationwide.

“Update on the reconstruction of the Ibadan–Ilesa/Ife Federal Highway. Vandals are at it again! They’re cutting and removing starter bars/shoulder rods at the construction site. This is pure wickedness. The government is helping us build good roads, but some Nigerians are vandalising them. I’m tired!” he wrote.

Reacting via a quoted post, Onanuga condemned the suspects in strong terms, describing them as “unconscionable” and “the worst species of citizens,” while calling for extreme measures against those involved.

“Just shoot these unconscionable vandals/thieves at sight. They are the worst species of citizens,” he wrote.

Vandalism of public infrastructure remains a persistent problem in Nigeria, affecting not only road projects but also oil pipelinesrailway tracks, and electricity facilities. Such acts often lead to significant economic lossesservice disruptions, and, in some cases, loss of lives.
