U.S. President Trump awarded inaugural Fifa peace prize at World Cup draw in Washington
U.S. President Donald Trump has been announced as the inaugural recipient of the newly established FIFA Peace Prize during the current draw for the 2026 World Cup taking place in Washington D.C.
Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, bestowed the accolade on stage at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, stating that Trump was chosen "in acknowledgment of his remarkable and extraordinary endeavors to foster peace and harmony across the globe."
"This is your award, this is your peace award," Infantino remarked, after Trump ascended the platform to receive the trophy, a medal, and a certificate. "There is also a splendid medal for you that you can wear wherever you wish to go."
FIFA indicates that the accolade is designated for "individuals who assist in uniting people in peace through steadfast dedication and significant actions."
The organization has yet to reveal specifics about the selection procedure, although a newly formed "social responsibility" committee reportedly led by the contentious Myanmar magnate Zaw Zaw will suggest the process for forthcoming awards.
While receiving the recognition, Trump described it as "one of the greatest honors of my life," before asserting that he had "saved millions of lives – the Congo serves as an example, over 10 million people lost and it was on track for another 10 million very rapidly. India and Pakistan, numerous conflicts we were able to resolve, in some instances just before they commenced."
He continued to commend Infantino for "establishing new milestones on ticket sales" and claimed the 2026 tournament would be "an event the likes of which may have never been witnessed by the world."
Trump wrapped up his remarks by stating: "The world is a more secure place now… we are the most prominent nation anywhere on the globe."
